AIAG Announces OEM Deployment Plan for New AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook

FMEA cover capture

Initially announced by the OEMs at last month’s Quality Summit, we’re pleased to share the following details regarding North American OEM deployment plans for the new AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) listed the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook as an accepted FMEA methodology in their IATF 16949 Customer Specific Requirements document in July 2019. During the summit, FCA stated that the handbook’s methodology is “allowed for use” effective immediately on a case by case basis, and that agreement between FCA and the supplier is required before beginning use. The handbook may be used for future programs that are sourced in or after December 2019. In either case, FCA requests the supplier use the handbook’s standard DFMEA Form Sheet and PFMEA Alternate Form “G” for their submissions.

Ford announced they will immediately accept FMEA(s) from suppliers using the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook approach. Additionally, suppliers will be required to utilize the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook on a per program basis with future programs starting with either 2022 model year programs or commodities requiring a Functional Safety focus.

General Motors estimates they will begin implementing the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook methodology with programs that begin in calendar year 2023. GM continues to investigate when they will start accepting FMEA(s) developed using the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook methodology and will announce their transition through their customer specific requirements.

Honda North America announced they will immediately accept FMEA(s) from suppliers using the AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook approach. Honda estimates that on or around February 1, 2022 suppliers will be required to use the FMEA Handbook for new production processes, new production lines and new production parts. Honda expects all PFMEA documents be in the AIAG & VDA FMEA format by January 2027.
